Man I am slow with this!
I will say I had a good race… and was not envious of all the deer dodging going on it Lago.
I entered the single track I would assume close to last. but that was fine with me because of all the head wind to come I just moved around people slowly making sure I was getting a good draft. By the time I hit the climb after the start finish the first selection had been made… although they didn’t have a TON of time on us. I just focused on keeping the pace high. Me and Nathan Winklemann were in a group together along with Billy kurtz, Matt Davis and Matt Googe. Every time Nathan Winklemann would get on the front a take a pull up a climb, everyone (but me and obviously him) would yo-yo off the back of our group so, that was a cool feeling. My efforts are somewhat diminished by the fact that Nathan Winklemann did an adventure race the day before and he was setting a pace that was a little uncomfortable to follow. By the time the second lap started I felt really really good and was working pretty hard at keeping the pace high and keeping the other three away from us. Nathan Winklemann would save me from the wind from time to time and I enjoyed the fact that he wasn’t afraid to work. Just as we caught up to Scott Henry who had been shelled off the front group we started the climb right after the start finish line. About half way up, I lifted my front wheel up over a root and when the wheel came down I heard a nasty little ‘clunk’. My skewer had come un-done and I made this fairly vocal as I pulled over to the side and fixed it. Obviously, this was a super quick fix, but a gap between Nathan Winklemann and I existed and he exploited this like no other. Straight up dropping me like a bad habit . So I rode by myself for a little while. Matt Gordon caught me. I rode with him for a little while until he started pushing it more and more through corners and I slipped up a couple of times. Then i rode by myself to the finish.
I am pretty excited where I sit right now fitness wise seeing as its early march and I have yet to do anything more intense than sub-threshold work. We will see what the following two weeks bring with Waco being the next stop. Oh, and a venture back to the “Dark Side” (Road racing) this next weekend with Tunis-Roubaix.
