Interval distractions

Posted 5 months ago by Phil Wikoff — on the road again

Just checking in to offer a few musical suggestions to accompany your interval sessions. It’s certainly the meaty time of the early season for intervals. Most Texans are aiming to leave their mark on the 3 big weekends in the next four weeks. I am not exactly encouraging people to listen to music while they’re riding on the open roads but maybe if you already do or you’re logging your intervals indoors on the trainer, these albums might ease your mental anguish. In no order here are a few albums that can be played straight through and will compliment your up-cadence intervals.

  • Datarock – Datarock. This one comes straight from SE’s own David Wenger. In your mind conjure up a vision of a Norwegian town nestled deep in the hills and North Sea. Now mix that with post-adolescent men chanting and running around on stage in matching red jumpsuits. They have even done SXSW but it was a few years ago.
  • Daft Punk – Alive 2007. This album is a bit of a guilty pleasure. I guess I’ll no longer be a closet Daft Punk fan after I post this but… oh well here goes. This album comes a decade after their original Alive 1997. It features many songs you probably know and mixes them all up. My sister recommended this one and I couldn’t resist. If you’re going crazy doing intervals, this one may just kind of fit that theme. Frenetic, corny, French! Bonus points: If Lalapalooza is an indication, ACLFest might get Daft Punk in ‘08. Who knows?
  • Sound Team – Movie Monster. Not geeky techno. Austin-raised and now extinct rock band. Just good driving beats over the entire album. 45 minutes will go by like that. In their ‘07 farewell run, they had shows at both SXSW at Hotel San Jose and ACLFest on a big stage. I will miss these guys.

Ok that’s all. that’s 3 interval sessions worth of music. I will follow up some other suggestions as they inspire me. This weekend is Walburg/Pace Bend. I have a great new Serotta HSG Carbon which I feel good on. I also have been pleasantly surprised by the Specialized S-works shoes I started using a few weeks back. They have varus canting (ask a SE consultant) which my arches and knees are absolutely loving. Wish me luck out there
